During the process of restoring a vehicle, there are a number of decisions you make that can cause your hair to fall out. Should I go with an automatic or manual transmission? What kind of wheel-and-tire package should I choose? Both tough decisions, but in my opinion, neither of these or any other, for that matter, you will make along the way compare to choosing the exterior colour. There are just so many things to consider as you begin looking at the seemingly endless amount of paint chips available. I don’t know how long I spent looking them over before realizing I really didn’t like any of them. Then I met the boys at “The Little Shop That Could” named RODZ Custom Motorcars in Maple Ridge B.C., and everything changed from there on out.

RODZ is a small shop specializing in restorations and custom paint, operated by longtime bodyman and painter Chris Radke, who grew up in the area. RODZ, which can only be described as controlled chaos, was taken over last summer by Radke and has enjoyed steady growth as the shop floor is stuffed with classic Corvettes, Mustangs and even a dune buggy or two awaiting restoration or repair. When I met with Radke, I explained that I wanted to paint the Shovelle the same green as the artist’s rendering because the car was already green and being a budget build, it would save a considerable amount of money by not doing a complete colour change. I went on to explain how I had been unsuccessful at finding the colour that looked remotely close to the rendering. That’s when he introduced me to his longtime friend, Randy “The Colour God” Vickers.

Also a bodyman and painter by trade, Vickers works for a large bodyshop chain by day but loves coming by some nights and weekends to lend a hand and bang on the same sheet metal they did in their youth. As soon as I showed Vickers the rendering of the car, you could see his mind jump into gear. Off to the colour sample rack he went, going in and out of the building trying to see how each example looked in different light in search of the perfect match. After an hour or so of back and forth he turned to me and said “Give me till Monday and I will find the right one for you.”

A few days later, I stopped by the shop and he looked at me with a big grin and said “I got it!” We went outside and he showed me how this sample changed colours from brilliant to dark depending which way you held it up to the light, and I knew right then he had nailed it. The colour: Emerald Fire which can be found on the 2007-10 Jaguar line. To the untrained eye, it looks like it has metallic flake in it, but I was quickly corrected by Radke and Vickers that it was pearl I was seeing and there was no metallic present at all. They went on to inform me that metallic was the eighties and the Emerald Fire would not only make the car look fantastic, but give this forty-year-old a modern look.

Now, as you may recall, our project started out pretty straight, so other than having to fix our little shop accident, the bodywork should be fairly straightforward. So after a quick stop at Gasoline Alley to pick up some new sheet metal, grille and bumper for the front end, Radke got to work filling in any problem areas. There were a few surprises such as the roof area behind the rear side windows, but all-in-all the car was pretty solid. After filling and sanding these areas, it was time to lay down a coat of Sikkens grey base primer, primer filler, a final sand with 400 grit and then the epoxy sealer which hides any imperfections plus provides a solid ground coat.

Next, Radke did some experimental mixing to come up with the titanium colour, and then sprayed down the side of the car that the stripe design would occupy. Then the fun began, as Radke and Vickers painstakingly laid out the design on the front quarters and doors. It was quite something to witness them using simply quarter inch masking tape and some paper to create and duplicate our accent design. After masking off the stripes, Radke began to spray the first of four base coats of Sikkens. From there, the masking was removed off the stripes and three coats of Sikkens clear were then applied, really bringing the Emerald Fire to life.

Our budget for paint and body was set at $8,000 and I am happy to report that the total bill from RODZ was $6,000 which included the new Cowl Induction hood. Since we came in under budget, we decided to pick up a new replacement rear bumper (as the front was replaced in the insurance claim) and right inner fender which ran us $600 from Gasoline Alley, bringing the total to $6,600 for paint and bodywork...not too bad at all!

The whole job turned out fantastic thanks to the care and attention of the RODZ crew. They can be reached at 604-460-6681 if you would like additional information on this part of the build.

WHAT THEY DO:	RESTORE AND REBUILD VEHICLES THROUGH TRADITIONAL METALWORK TECHNIQUES

THE COMPANY LINE:

Background: REB Auto was founded in 1970 by Rick Bartok. After learning his trade in automotive metal work, Rick opened his shop, first in North Vancouver, specializing in custom hot rod restoration and rebuilding. Now in Surrey, Bartok lends his unique metal shaping and fabricating skills to save classic vehicles and hot rods from the ravages of time.

PP: So, it’s obvious by the surroundings of your shop here that you are a metalwork man. How did you get your start?

RB: In the mid ‘60s, I moved to Prince George for four years to work with two older fellows, who taught me to lead and do a lot of stuff the old way, work you just don’t see anymore. They would give me work, then laugh at it when I was done, but I learned quite a bit from them. I then went to work for a time down in Vancouver with Dave Williams’ body shop. They only did metal work, leading and lacquer which I learned by working with their old school body men. They liked me there, so continued to teach the skills I needed, and that’s how I learned my craft. But it’s something I continue to learn throughout the years, and I’m still learning new things today.

PP: So you specialize in the metal and body work. Is that all you do here?

RB: Well, I don’t do mechanical, upholstery or glass any more. I feel it’s better to stay with what you know, specializing in your own field. Others may be jacks-of-all-trades, they can do everything, but nothing perfect. I also try to educate my customers; I walk them through what I do, the different stages that I take and the difference between restoration and rebuilding. It’s important that they realize what I do, how I do it, and that I won’t deviate from my job. And they also need to be just as committed, to follow through with the project.

PP: Seeing all the special tools you use to manipulate the metal by hand, and watching you work the metal into shape, would you say your skills are a dying art?

RB: Well, it is a changing world. You can go out and buy body parts, but they never seem to fit, they’re not the same quality and the metal isn’t the same. Buying these off-shore parts, you work harder to do cheaper work. I prefer to rework the old metal. Or if someone wants something custom, I don’t glue parts of other cars onto my projects. I build them from scratch, I shape the metal to the car to give it the look my customer is looking for. I love changing the design of a car with metal.

PP: So do you work with the metal to the point you don’t need to use filler?

RB: If someone can afford it, thats what I prefer. With the needs of the customer changing and the way the economy swings, you go so far with metal, then the customer will dictate when to do the rest with filler. Going all the way with metal gives me the greatest sense of achievement though.

PP: What project would you say you’re most proud of?

RB: Designing and building the cab of a 1940 Ford Pick-up. I think it’s a pretty rare piece by any standard. The achievement in building this vehicle has been immense. It’s something I’ve been working on for two years now. The cab has been totally rebuilt being stretched, widened and chopped. I’ve completely reworked the front end, adding little accents that have gone unnoticed. I had some guys come in wanting to be sure the truck was going to be kept original, when in fact I had completely customized every square inch, and they left not knowing any better.

PP: To have classic enthusiasts fooled into thinking the truck is original despite such major changes, that’s got to be a huge compliment to your work.

RB: I didn’t quite know how to take it at the time, but I consider that one of my best compliments. They thought it was an original vehicle, when it was totally customized. If you do it tastefully, its hard to detect to the untrained eye, so to fool a trained eye, that means I’ve done something right.

PP: If you could build any car for yourself, what would you build?

RB: I would like to create an old hot rod, a Model T or A. I would totally customize it with six- or eight-foot fenders to my own shape, and a custom roadster body. I think that would be a great challenge. Then I think I would power it with a Chevy V8 or maybe even an old Chrysler Hemi.

Ken Houghton was given an opportunity to jump into an industry that he was passionate about during a snowy drive up the Coquihalla highway three years ago. As a lover of classic domestic muscle, it didn’t take the 15 year Maple Ridge businessman long to make the decision to take over the reigns at one of Western Canada’s most prolific classic auto parts shop – Gasoline Alley.

It’s no secret that 2009 was a particularly hard year for all concerned with the auto industry. Despite the hardships, Gasoline Alley was able to survive thanks to the dedication of their customers, and the need for Do-It-Yourself parts. Thats what Gasoline Alley is all about. Whether it be body parts, interior pieces, trim, or mechanical bits and pieces, Gasoline Alley stocks or has access to everything from that hard to find bolt, to entire frames for domestic vehicles built from 1947 to 2010. Top level customer service, industry experience, hardware knowledge and customers that have stayed true to the company have allowed Gasoline Alley to endure the hard times.

Along with Ken and his wife Colleen at the helm of the company, Terra Puffer and Bob Hayward who are working the counters, both extremely knowledgeable and helpful in getting you the parts you need. Terra has been with Gasoline for 8 years now, while Bob has been in the business for 30 years, with extensive knowledge of the parts he now recommends. That type of experience means you know you are in good hands, giving the customer confidence that Gasoline Alley have all the “latest and greatest” parts and techniques and can pass that knowledge on to you.

However, not everything is the same from a year ago. A new company strategy means that Ken and Colleen have moved the company in a new direction, starting most importantly with the shops location. Location, location, location is the chant of good business owners everywhere, and Gasoline Alley have now moved closer to their core customer market in the lower mainland. Situated in the industrial complex at the north end of the all-new Golden Ears bridge in Maple Ridge, Gasoline Alley is now easier to get to than ever before. Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford and Mission are all well known for housing the majority of classic domestic car owners. And if you still can’t get to them, they will ensure the parts get to you, even if they have to personally deliver them themselves. While the lower mainland makes up a large part of the business, Gasoline Alley also ships all over Canada.

Gasoline Alley isn’t just for car lovers, as an ever increasing portion of the business has been turning towards restoring and customizing trucks as well. As such Gasoline Alley can be just as helpful to the truck owner. But it’s not just the backyard mechanic that relies of Gasoline Alley, hot rod shops, body shops, insurance agencies and even the movie industry also works closely with the company. However, if you are a backyard mechanic in need of some new parts, Gasoline Alley will be celebrating their new home by offering up to 50% off almost all in stock items.

Whether you need to finish off your build with that hard to find piece of trim, replace a rusted out body panel or simply need some routine maintenance items, Gasoline Alley is your one stop shop for classic and American muscle parts. Check out their new location at #7-11720 Stewart Crescent Maple Ridge BC, or www.gasolinealleyclassiccarparts.com. Or you can contact the crew at, gasalley1@aol.com or give them a call at 604-460-2884, toll free at 1-800-663-8128.

Billed as the “Motorsport Event of the Year,” the 14th annual B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show returns to the Abbotsford Tradex for three great days of motorsport action, Friday to Sunday, April 23 to 25. This year’s event will be jam packed with more than 250 of the Pacific Northwest’s finest Street Rods, Muscle Cars, Classics and Race Cars, and will also feature numerous unveilings of Custom Car creations by some of Western Canada’s top car crafters. Stars scheduled to be in attendance include Brett ‘Big Schwag’ Wagner of Speed Channel’s Pass Time, the ‘King Of Kustomizers’, George Barris, who will be bringing his world famous Batmobile with him to the show, and Chip Foose, star of the hit TV series ‘Overhaulin’. Nitro Dragsters, Funny Cars and Fuel Altereds will all be firing up their 3,500+ horsepower over an expanded two nights as it has proven to be a real fan favourite. New for 2010 is the addition of a premier Collector Car Auction conducted by The Electric Garage. They host first-class events throughout Western Canada and everyone is looking forward to their first auction in the Vancouver area. Show times are Friday 5pm to 10pm, Saturday 10am to 10pm and Sunday 10am to 5pm. After 25 years of producing Western Canada’s largest collector car and motorsport show, Liz Oglu has given the keys to the Electric Car Garage, Western Canada’s largest collector car auction company. Although the registration has officially changed hands, Oglu will still be sitting in the driver’s seat for 2010 with her responsibility as Show Manager. As in previous years, the show will fill the halls of Northlands Park (now known as Edmonton Expo Centre), where construction has finally been completed. The show will be filled with hundreds of show cars, trucks, motorcycles, entertainment and vendor booths. Appearing at this year’s show for the first time is Pete Chapouris of SoCal, builder of the famous hot rod “The California Kid.” He will be at the show the entire weekend signing autographs and talking to attendees. Of course, it wouldn’t be Powerama without Alberta’s Biggest Swap Meet that returns to the main floor for 2010. The show runs Friday to Sunday, April 23 to 25 and tickets are available at the door or through Ticketmaster. For more information please go to www.powerama.ca

This is definitely the time of year to either pick up parts or purchase the car of your dreams. The Sukanen Museum Swap Meet & Hobby Show in Moose Jaw, Sask. and the Sun Valley Swap Meet in Vernon, B.C. both go the weekend of March 27. In April, there are several swap meets including the 46th Portland Swap Meet in Portland, Oregon; the 29th Mount Vernon Swap Meet, Mt. Vernon, Washington; the Classic & Vintage Swap & Show in Tsawwassen B.C.; the Golden Ears VCCC Swap Meet in Maple Ridge, B.C.; the British Car Restoration Fair & Boot Sale in Saanichton, B.C., and of course, the 41st Annual Red Deer Swap Meet at the Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta. If you are more inclined to purchase, there are two big auctions being held the weekend of April 23 in both Alberta and B.C. The Collector Car Group (www.thecollectorcargroup.com) will be under the roof inside of the Olympic Oval in Calgary with a huge selection of vehicles up for grabs, many of them without a reserve. On the coast, the Electric Garage (www.TheElectricGarage.com) will put on their first auction in the Lower Mainland at the B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show, offering a wide range of custom and restored vehicles.

Wiebe is a regular at Misson Raceway Park’s Friday Night Street Legal drags and to date his ultra-clean Invader has ripped off an impressive best 1/4-mile ET of 11.61 at 116 mph. 1969 Camaro

Owner:
Ken Monro of
Brandon, Manitoba

About the Car:
Purchased from a farmer in Saskatchewan who had just put it outside for the winter after buying a new tractor, Monro convinced him to hold it for him until spring when he could pick it up. It was in great shape other than rocker panels and hood. It came with the original 327 engine, in great running condition, has stock disc brakes and 15 inch rally wheels and was repainted the factory correct Daytona blue with white stripes. Interior is brand new from RPM. He is constantly striving to make this car the perfect muscle car in his eye. Possible future upgrades would include new torq thrust wheels and possible cam swap. Purchased a 4 speed standard trans to convert it for more fun driving.
After an extensive and over-the-top sweepstakes last year when Cherry Bomb gave away its highly publicized project Dodge Charger on national television, owner Paul Banks knew it was time to outdo himself on the next one. His plan: to team with YearOne and recreate his own version of the 1968 Camaro, one of the cars largely responsible for the early success of the Cherry Bomb Glasspack brand.

Cherry Bomb’s Disturbing the Peace 1968 Project Camaro blends today’s radical technology with ‘60s & ‘70s hotrod style.

The LSX-based engine will be given significant enhancements by an 8-71 BDS blower, a BDS intercooler system, electronic fuel injection, aftermarket EFI and coil pack controllers, a custom accessory drive system, and, of course, a killer custom exhaust with Cherry Bomb side pipes. The fuel system will include a custom fuel tank with baffles and in-tank fuel pumps, and the cooling system will be made up of a Be Cool aluminum radiator and custom covered hoses. A T-56 Magnum 6-Speed Transmission by Tremec will round out the torque transfer.

The rear axle: a Moser 9-inch rear with 3.73 posi. A Detroit Speed and Engineering hydroformed subframe and C6 steering knuckles and tubular control arms will make up the front suspension, followed in the rear by a Detroit Speed and Engineering Quadra-Link. Baer 6S 6-piston brakes will provide its occasional need for stopping power.

The wheel-and-tire combo sets the whole tone of the ride with Custom Billet Slot Mags in 18x8 fronts and 18x12 rears, on BFG g-Force KDW 245/40-18 up front and BFG g-Force Drag Radial 345/30-18 in the rear.

A Vintage Air AC system, Alpine head unit and Boston Acoustics amps and speakers round out the interior’s must-have creature comforts. The interior will, of course, include YearOne restoration parts, Classic Instruments gauges, and custom Cerullo seats. The body: YearOne reproduction panels and trim mini-tubbed and modified for four-link rear suspension. Painted Cherry Bomb red over flat black with gloss stripes, and black powder-coated trim and details, this Disturbing the Peace Camaro will be considered another true Cherry Bomb signature statement!

In addition to the legendary Cherry Bomb Glasspack, Cherry Bomb now offers six different high performance muffler products, each created with their own unique design that provides improved horsepower and fuel savings, plus a great high performance sound including Cherry Bomb Pro, Cherry Bomb Elite, Cherry Bomb Extreme (available in traditional Cherry Bomb red), Cherry Bomb Turbo, and the company’s top-of-the-line, most technologically advanced product, the Cherry Bomb Vortex. Additionally, Cherry Bomb offers a wide range of cat-back systems, accessories, and a very popular line of apparel including hats, garage jackets, tee shirts and more.

For more information about the full line of Cherry Bomb mufflers, systems and accessories, visit www.cherrybomb.com or call 866-869-9704.

Auction Matriarch Passes

Many car buffs might not know her name or what she was mostly responsible for, but mention ‘Barrett-Jackson’ and it will all fall into place. Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction lost the last of its founding generation with the death Wednesday, February 10 of Ellen “Nellie” Jackson, 90. The wife of Russell Jackson, co-founder of the 39-year-old Scottsdale auction with Tom Barrett III, Nellie was fondly known as the matriarch of Barrett-Jackson, who, despite her advanced years, was still deeply involved in the event. In January’s event this year, she attended part of the Scottsdale auction, seen in the front row in the enormous main tent.

Born in Pontiac, Michigan, she arrived with her husband in Arizona in 1960, Russ driving his 1934 Cadillac V12 Opera Coupe and Nellie driving a new 1960 Cadillac. She remained fond of that era of Cadillac throughout her life, over the years owning several of the ’59 models with their towering fins, as well as many American classics from the 1930s. Russ Jackson and Tom Barrett met in 1967, when the two classic-car collectors haggled over a 1933 Cadillac that Barrett wanted to sell. They never did agree on a price, but their meeting resulted in a friendship and partnership that spawned the inaugural Barrett-Jackson auction in 1971 in Scottsdale.

Throughout the years, Nellie Jackson was integral to the growth of the collector-car auction from the small-town event that started the run, to the monumental event that it is today. In 2004, she was honoured with Meguiar’s Treasure of the Collector Car Hobby.

After the retirement of the founders, the auction business was operated by the Jacksons’ elder son, Brian, with the assistance of his brother, Craig, who was 14 years younger. Brian died of cancer in 1995 at the age of 49, which suddenly thrust Craig into the leadership role of the huge event. But Craig had his mother’s help, just as Brian did before him. Nellie was known for her sharp business sense and encyclopedic memory of thousands of collector cars’ histories. With her accounting background, she was able to help guide the business as it grew by leaps and bounds. Since 1996, the Barrett-Jackson auction has grown into 2010’s four multi-day events in Scottsdale, West Palm Beach, Las Vegas and now Orange County, bolstered by many hours of live television that are SPEED’s highest-rated programs.

In a recent interview for Phoenix Woman magazine, Nellie said, “Brian ran the auction business until he passed away. Then Craig took over and has really grown the business to what it is today. His dad would be so proud.”

Nellie Jackson is survived by Craig and grandchildren Shelby and Hunter Jackson. August 7, 1919 – February 10, 2010.

A full tribute can be read on the Barrett-Jackson website at:

JF Kustoms TV

Many of you will remember the article in our March/April 2009 issue covering acclaimed and revolutionary Canadian customiser, JF Launier of JF Kustoms, based in Osoyoos, BC.

For those who don’t, JF received the coveted World’s Most Beautiful Custom award at the 59th Sacramento Autorama in Sacramento, CA in February 2009. Launier’s R’Evolution, the highly-acclaimed 1955 Chrysler Wagon, was chosen for its stylization, high-quality craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout.

Not a guy to rest on his laurels, there have been some other significant efforts undertaken. ‘We’ve got a bit of everything… a Shelby Mustang GT500 getting the show car finish, a ‘51 Dodge two-door Business Coupe that looks traditional (til you lift the hood), a ’55 Chev H/T street rod/show car, the Riviera street machine project and a few other little surprises,’ JF explains on his website (www.jfkustoms.com).

At the time, even with the projects underway or simply in the planning stage, it was mentioned there would be some involvement in a TV series. Well – it has happened.

DHS Productions is proud to announce its partnership with JF Kustoms to produce a weekly web-based entertainment show. As of January 15, 2010, you will be able to keep up with one of the automotive industry’s newest rising stars, JF Launier and his crew at JF Kustoms. The show is a short ten minutes per week, but will offer the audience an interesting look at what it takes to be a young Canadian kid in a heavily U.S.-influenced hobby. You will see the trials and tribulations first hand as this team tries to stay ahead of a quickly growing industry.

JF was also last year’s ‘Trendsetter of the Year’ at SEMA – a title not taken lightly. Can the crew stay on top of the bubble? What obstacles have they faced and will stand in their way? With colourful staff, great customers and a busy family life, JF’s show promises to have what it takes to be entertaining and educational.

Even though I couldn’t find any figures to back it up, I would estimate, based on the advertising inquiries we’ve received, that between the full service custom/restoration shops and the support suppliers popping up all over Western Canada, the growth figure would be between fifty and seventy-five percent since the turn of the century.

Most of them during this time, like any business, have had their share of growing pains, but for the most part there were very few failures along the way. So when an economic downturn, the size of which hadn’t been seen since the Great Depression, came about in 2009, many thought the floodgates of business failures were about to open. But it hasn’t been the case. Not to say things didn’t slow down to a near-stop at year-end, but most weathered the storm and are ready for a brighter 2010.

Over the past year, there have been a few closures of smaller shops, but the bigger players are still practicing their craft. One exception is Killer Customs in Pitt Meadows, B.C. Blake Foster and Paul Dyck made the decision to dissolve Killer at the end of the year and go their separate ways. That’s not to say they left the industry, though. Foster wanted to concentrate on his successful company, Speed Tech Performance, which supplies Made-in-Canada, full sub-frame and suspension systems for Camaros and Chevelles, while Dyck, who has continued to run Racer’s Decals through the Killer years, now flies under the banner of D.Y.C.K. Design and continues to provide custom graphics and decals for the automotive industry.

So even with all the uncertainty, the industry pushes on. Maybe with a few more dents and alterations, but unlike the majority of industries, the men and women who provide and supply the parts and services are almost all hobbyists themselves. They are the key to the growth of the industry, as it is almost never the case of them seeking to fill their pockets; it’s more about promoting and advancing the hobby.

So if you’ve been planning something new for your ride and have been holding off, show your support for them and give your favourite shop a call...they’ll be happy to hear from you!

If there is one thing you can say about Italians, it is that they are a very passionate people. And one of the things Italians hold closest to their hearts are their automobiles. Italian-built cars exude sex appeal and glorious engine tones, while racing is regarded nearly on the same level as religion. And thus, one of the most sacred of all racing circuits anywhere in the world is Monza.

It is this passion for cars and performance that was bred into Vince Greco, owner of Monza Auto, a shop named in honour of the hallowed racing circuit. After working as a mechanic for 12 years in his native Italy, Greco moved to Canada and opened Monza Auto in 2001. Located in North Eastern Calgary, Monza provides mechanic services specializing in Porsche, Mercedes, Volkswagen, BMW and Audi as well as all Asian Imports.

If you’ve ever met Vince, you’ll undoubtedly know what an experience it is. He is a man full of energy, fast talking and there’s no beating around the bush as he gets right to the point. It’s refreshing and makes for a unique experience when you have your car worked on, as he happily portrays his passion for all things automotive. His business practices are simple. He believes strongly in customer service to the point that he backs up the shop’s work with a lifetime warranty on labour and three-year warranty on parts. Thats something you just don’t get from your average franchise mechanic.

So what do they do at Monza? While not your typical neighbourhood mechanic, Monza is a certified repair shop that handles basic maintenance issues to major repair jobs and even detailing on any make or model. But don’t be surprised if you see the odd Ferrari or Lamborghini up on the hoist. During the winter, the shop offers winterization packages on top of the basic service they provide. However, come warmer weather, Monza is well known for the customization work they do for others who enjoy their cars as much as Vince. Whether it be big brake kits, suspension upgrades, engine swaps or a new set of shiny wheels, Monza knows why you want to personalize your vehicle, and will work with you to find that perfect look.

No matter what auto related issue takes you to Monza, you can be sure they are dedicated to maintaining a safe and efficient vehicle for you and your family, providing you with honest feedback regarding the proper maintenance of your vehicle. And in return, you will gain a sense of confidence that you expect out of your car or truck.

So whether you need just an oil change, want to winterize your car, or want to do a full high-performance engine swap, check out www.monzauto.com, or you can experience Vince for yourself, either on the phone at (403) 230-2886, or meet him face-to-face at the shop located at 3920 - 3A Street NE, Calgary, Alberta T2E 6R4. Either way, it will be an experience you will never forget.
