When I arrived in Kingston in 2006, I discovered that the cruising and NASCAR scenes were very active, but for some reason, drag racing didn’t seem to be. The nearest track is Shannonville, which is about 45 minutes west of us, but it doesn’t put on IHRA- or NHRA-sanctioned professional events. In B.C., I had always gone to the NHRA Northwest Nationals in Kent, Washington to get my fix of Top Fuel racing.

The move to Kingston, Ontario from Port Coquitlam, B.C. in September 2006, was a big change. But being only two kilometres from our first two granddaughters made it more than worth it. Of course, my son and his wife are expecting our third granddaughter in September, in Surrey...

If you have been to a major drag racing event in Western Canada, chances are good that you have seen the Funny Cars of the International Blown Alcohol Association, with their huge smoky burnouts followed by mid-seven-second quarter-mile runs. They are probably the most popular cars in the West, and for good reasons.

Ah, the joy of speed. That is the Holy Grail that each racer reaches for and it is no different for Pitt Meadows, B.C. resident Rob Fisher. His wild 2003 Mustang Cobra Terminator runs a 10:29 at 136 miles per hour and lays claim to being the fastest Cobra in Western Canada. But that doesn’t stop Fisher from always looking to shave off a few more tenths each time he runs out at the Friday night street legal races at Mission Raceway Park.
