First Gear: Cowie Wins First-Ever National Event

cowie First Gear: Cowie Wins First Ever National EventCowie Wins First-Ever National Event But Force Remains Fan Favourite!

This year on my annual journey to the SEMA show, I decided to go early so that I could take in the final day of the NHRA Nationals at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Before I get into the event, though, I have to advise anyone who is into racing, be it NASCAR or NHRA, to make the effort to take in an event at this fabulous track, as it is a first class facility. (For the record, I paid my own way in, so I’m not just saying it because I got a freebie!)
Under sunny skies, Shawn Cowie of Delta, B.C. found himself in the Top Alcohol Dragster final versus Brandon Johnson of Shelton, WA. Johnson had a slight edge at the starting line, but Cowie made up the difference by the time they got by the Christmas tree to post a 5.353 at 267.69 mph and win his first National event by .102 of a second. It’s a great accomplishment and our hats are off to Shawn and his crew from Team Mundie’s Towing.
John Force didn’t make it to the finals in Funny Car but there was no doubt who the favourite was on the day. It was the first time I had seen him at a live racing event and all I can say is you have to see it to believe it. Every move he made sent the crowd into a frenzy. Each time he made a pass or rode his scooter by the grandstands, everyone rose to their feet and cheered for the undisputed king of drag racing. His merchandise had to outsell all others two to one, as the Castrol logo seemed to be everywhere.
What a fabulous way to kick off SEMA week, witnessing the crowning of a Canadian Champ and the continuing outpouring of affection to the King.
We would like to wish everyone a happy holiday season and prosperous 2010.
