The Diesel Powered 2018 Ford F-150 is Almost Here!
When the F-150’s recent mid-cycle refresh was announced back in later summer, one of the major takeaways was the fact that we would soon be seeing the first ever diesel-powered F-150 hit the market. A few months have passed since then and now word has come down from Ford that we will be seeing orders taken for the diesel F-150 beginning in the next week or so with deliveries scheduled to begin this Spring. More information has come out about the new powertrain that will be added as an option to the F-150, which now sees its total engine options go up to six. The 3.0L Power Stroke diesel will share many of the same proven technology found in the Super Duty’s larger 6.7L Power Stroke and will push out an impressive 250 horsepower and 440 lb-ft. of torque. This allows the truck to deliver 11,400 pounds of towing capacity and 2,020 pounds of payload capacity. Peak torque for the new engine comes at just 1,750 rpm with strong torque deliver continuing throughout the rpm range which is the ideal setup for towing or hauling heavy loads for long distances.
The new V6 diesel will feature the same compacted-graphite iron block material construction and forged steel crank used in the 2.7L EcoBoost engine which not only reduces weight but actually adds strength. In terms of the turbocharger for the new powertrain option, Ford have chosen a highly-efficient, variable-geometry turbocharger that will allow for greater responsiveness and reduced turbo lag. A standard SelectShift 10-speed automatic transmission has been specifically calibrated for use with the new Power Stroke V6 and will maximize shift points and gear ratios to optimize power, low-rpm torque and efficiency.
The diesel engine option will be available for both 4×2 and 4×4 F-150’s in the Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum edition SuperCrew trucks with either bed configuration as well as the SuperCab trucks with the 6.5-foot bed. More details will surely be following as we get closer to the actual delivery date, such as the fuel economy numbers which Ford say will be available in the Spring.
