Road Test: Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Sahara

New for 2019: The Jeep Wrangler JL was introduced as a brand new model for 2018 after undergoing a complete redesign after a decade of the JK model. Not much has changed as we go into 2019 save for the addition of adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.

The Skinny: The Wrangler has enjoyed some early success in what is now year two following the introduction of the JL model back in 2018. The SUV has retained the same look, capability and overall feel you’d expect a Wrangler to have but has seen the welcome addition of more comfort and technology features such as a new, modern interior design complete with the UConnect 3 or 4 systems and a choice of 5-, 7-, or 8.4-in. touchscreen sizes. A backup camera is now standard and over 75 standard and available safety systems are offered. Despite the fact the majority of its owners will likely not ever test this out, I can say with confidence that the Wrangler has not lost any of its off-road functionality. Given that my only previous experience with the Wrangler was during its introductory media event in Tucson, Arizona’s deserts, I was more than pleased with its everyday functionality and can honestly say that driving it, whether around the city or on the highway, didn’t feel like such a chore as the outgoing model previously did. The aerodynamics have been drastically improved and the new 8-speed automatic transmission allows it to be economic then before.

Pros: As I said, the new Wrangler performs much, much better than the outgoing model on-road without losing any of its legendary off-road capability which I can confirm firsthand.

Cons: The only thing I could honestly think to put here was the fact that you will not get your hands on one for cheap with a starting MSRP of $35,195 which can very quickly climb when selecting options.

The Verdict: The Wrangler has been an incredibly popular vehicle for decades now and shows no signs of slowing down. A new 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder option and upcoming diesel variation provide buyers with more options than ever before and its become clear that Jeep simply will not allow anything to compromise its off-road prowess. The Wrangler provides a look and feel that almost no other vehicle on the market can replicate and for that reason alone, will almost certainly see continued success.
