Canadian Racer D.J. Kennington Pays Tribute to Humboldt Victims at Past Weekends NASCAR Race

Canadian NASCAR driver D.J. Kennington was one the latest and perhaps first in the motorsports world to honour the tragic Humboldt Broncos hockey team by placing the teams logo and the hashtag #PrayersForHumboldt on the hood of his car at this past weekend’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series event at Bristol Motor Speedway. As we’re you sure you’ve heard by now, the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League were en route to a playoff game when a semi-truck collided with the team’s bus near Armley, SK which sadly ended the lives of 16 passengers onboard and injured 13 more. The 40 year old racer from St.Thomas, Ontario is also working with his car owners, Gaunt Brothers Racing, to raise money for the team and the families that have been impacted by the crash. After the accident, a GoFundMe page was started to raise money for the victims and their families with the goal of raising $4 million and at the time of writing, we are happy to report that the goal has been shattered and currently sits at nearly $12.1 million. Kennington wasn’t the only NASCAR driver to show support over the weekend as driver of the No.5 car Micheal Annett added a smaller decal of the Bronco’s log just behind the driver’s side window in a show of support. Annett sent out a release via social media stating that he remembered riding buses fondly during his hockey playing days and would honour the team throughout the weekend.
