AJAC Announces Category Winners for Canadian Car of the Year and Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year

The Automotive Journalists Association of Canada have revealed which 14 new vehicles have won their respective categories and are now eligible to be considered for the either the Canadian Car of the Year or Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year awards. The winners were chosen by almost 100 voting members of AJAC who assessed the vehicles throughout the year by driving them in a variety of conditions. They were scored on a variety of different factors including performance, features, technology, design, fuel consumption and more. As mentioned, all 14 vehicles will now be eligible for the Canadian Car of the Year or Canadian Utility Vehicle of the year awards which will be determined through a separate round of voting with winners being announced next month on the media day of the Canadian International AutoShow in Toronto.

The big winners from this year are Mazda and Jaguar Land Rover with each taking home three wins, followed closely by Honda/Acura, Volkswagen and FCA who each saw two of their vehicles named winners in their respective categories.

Best City Car – Volkswagen e-Golf (Runners Up: Hyundai Ioniq Electric, Nissan Micra)

Best Small Car – Mazda3 (Runners Up: Chevrolet Bolt EV, Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid/PHEV)

Best Large Car – Honda Accord (Runners Up: Mazda6, Toyota Camry)

Best Small Premium Car – Jaguar XE (Runners Up: Alfa Romeo Giulia, Infiniti Q60)

Best Large Premium Car –Volvo S90 / V90 (Runners Up: Genesis G80, Lexus LC)

Best Sports – Performance Car – Volkswagen Golf R (Runners Up: Honda Civic Si, Honda Civic Type R)

Best Premium Sports – Performance Car – Jaguar F-TYPE (Runners Up: Porsche 718, Porsche 911)

Best Convertible – Mercedes-Benz SL (Runners Up: Mazda MX-5, Porsche 718 Boxster)

Best Small Utility Vehicle – Mazda CX-5 (Runners Up: Honda CR-V, Nissan Rogue)

Best Large Utility Vehicle –Mazda CX-9 (Runners Up: Toyota Highlander, Chevrolet Traverse)

Best Small Premium Utility Vehicle – Range Rover Velar (Runners Up: Porsche Macan, Volvo XC60)

Best Large Premium Utility Vehicle – Acura MDX (Runners Up: Land Rover Discovery, Volvo XC90)

Best Minivan – Chrysler Pacifica (Runners Up: Honda Odyssey, Kia Sedona)

Best Pick-Up Truck – Ram 1500 (Runners Up: Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tundra)
