Lincoln to Discontinue Continental After Current Generation

According to a report from well-respected website Ford Authority, Lincoln plans on discontinuing the Continental luxury sedan after the production of the current generation comes to an end. The website spoke to a source that is familiar with product plans for the Lincoln brand and confirmed that production would be coming to an end, although were unable to cite any reasons why. This comes just about a year and a half after the Continental nameplate was resurrected for the first time since 2002 and although it received positive reviews from the general public, this appears to only strengthen the notion that the popularity of crossovers and SUVs are at an all-time high with many buyers going that way rather than sedans. Though no Canadian numbers were cited in the report, Ford Authority suggested a big reason for the discontinuation was of course sales numbers which were underwhelming even after just a year and half on the market with the Continental’s biggest competitor, the Cadillac XTS, outselling it by over 4,000 units during its first full year of availability in the U.S. When asked if a replacement for the Continental was possible, Ford Authority’s source was less than optimistic.
