New for 2017: The new 3.6-litre V6 engine with 2 new gears has claims of being more fuel efficient as the new transmission has the ability to be in the right gear for the right engine output. The crew cab version comes with a turbo diesel engine option. Hill descent control is standard as is the automatic locking rear differential, tow hooks, and all-terrain tires on the Z71 trim. The Colorado’s MyLink interface now incorporates Apple CarPlay which works with most iPhone functions for ease and convenience on the trucks touchscreen.

Segment Competitors: Honda Ridgeline, Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier, GMC Canyon

The Skinny: I liked that the dash was organized and uncomplicated, as nothing is worse than having an overwhelming heat surge and not being able to find the fan control or a/c button. The Colorado has several options for customization so you can pick what works for your needs.  Special touches include a corner bumper step for those of us needing a helping hand up. The EZ lift/ lower tailgate that glides rather than drops is a welcome perk as well. There are an abundance of tie-down spots in the bed for all your carrying needs. After running errands all day and opening and shutting the back door, my favorite little extra gadget was the dash display; it beeps and shows a message when turning off the engine to check the backseat.

Pros: The crossover car-like feel makes the Colorado easy to maneuver in the ever shrinking parking spots or may even help make you a better parallel parker.

Cons: Back seats are more suitable for small children if going on long drives.

The Verdict: Definite contender if you are looking for the convenience of a truck with the feel of a crossover.
