Tesla Finally Officially Unveils Semi Truck
After what has seemed like a long wait, Tesla finally unveiled their Semi Truck at a recent event in Hawthorne, California. Company CEO Elon Musk was of course the person to helm the unveiling which featured two examples of the truck roll on stage showcasing their futuristic appearance. The truck will reportedly utilize four electric motors with two at each axle behind the cab which Tesla claims will propel the Semi truck from 0-60 mph (100km/h) in 5.0 seconds with an empty trailer and 20 seconds at its max gross weight of 80,000 lbs. (36,287 kg). Also with a full load going up a 5 percent grade, the truck will be able to reach 65 mph (105 km/h) which is 20 mph more than a traditional diesel rig which can reach up to 45 mph (72 km/h). According to Tesla’s website, the truck will have a 300 or 500 mile range (483 km and 805 km respectively) and will consume less than 2 kWh per mile. Inside the truck features a centralized driving position which Musk claims will help visibility but has been heavily questioned by many since the unveiling with some current truck drivers weighing in suggesting that it may cause more problems than it solves. Also featured on the truck is Tesla Armor Glass which Musk says is explosion-proof. Trucks can now be reserved for a small $20,000 USD fee and are expected to carry MSRPs of $150,000 USD for the 300 mile range version and $180,000 for the 500 mile offering.
