Toyota Supra Set to Make its Return to American Racing in NASCAR XFINITY Series
Toyota has announced that the Supra will make its return to American Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series (NXS) beginning in the 2019 season. This comes after the announcement earlier this year that the Supra will also be returning in production car form in the near future. For the racecar, Toyota worked with subsidiaries Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in Costa Mesa, California and Calty Design Research out of Newport Beach, California to develop the Supra for NASCAR competition. The teams worked together using past knowledge from there prior NASCAR entries including the 2018 Toyota Camry that won the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series championship. In order to build the Supra for NXS, TRD and Calty scaled the car to fit within NASCAR’s specifications for the NXS Series. Up until now, Toyota have been fielding a Camry in the NXS competitions since 2007 and have chalked up four manufacturer championships, two driver championships and 142 wins. The 2019 season will mark the first time Toyota will be fielding a different model in all three of NASCAR’s national series; Camry for the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, Supra for the NXS and Tundra in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. As mentioned, the Supra has previously raced in America and in Japan where it is was a force in the Super GT competition and a perennial contender in IMSA Camel GT Series in the 1980s.
