2017 Auto Sales Highlights: Ford Remains Best-Selling Auto Brand in Canada
For the ninth consecutive year, Ford has been named the best-selling automotive brand in Canada with the Ford F-Series remaining the best-selling vehicle in Canada for the eighth year in a row. In addition to that, Ford also claims to be the best-selling SUV brand in the country highlighted by 3% and 14% increases in sales for the Escape and Explorer respectively. General Motors also enjoyed a successful 2017 and were number 1 for total retail sales in Canada for 2017 after having enjoyed an especially outstanding December. The company saw an overall 15.2% increase in sales over the previous year with each of its four brands (Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac) experiencing either their best years ever or best in over a decade at the very least. Not to be outdone, Toyota Canada also announced that, led by record hybrid, truck and Lexus sales, they have recorded their best sales year every with an overall annual sales growth of 3.1%.
Another manufacturer that enjoyed their most successful sales year ever was the Nissan Group with an increase of 9.3% over 2016 which marks five years of consecutive annual sales growth for the Nissan. Calendar-year sales records were set by the Rogue, Murano, Armada, Frontier, Titan and NV200 models with the top three for the brand being the Rogue, Murano and Sentra. FCA Canada saw its Ram brand set an all-time sales record with 103,843 units while the company as a whole actually saw a slight 4% decrease in sales when compared with the 2016 numbers. Another brand that enjoyed a sales increase was Mazda Canada which saw a 7% growth over 2016 and experienced its best full-year sales since 2010.
In terms of luxury car manufacturers, BMW Group Canada reported its best year on record and its 27th consecutive year of growth overall. Key contributors to BMW’s sales growth were the all-new 5-Series with a 34% growth in sales and the MINI brand increasing by over 7%. The top luxury manufacturer in Canada for the fourth consecutive year was Mercedes-Benz who also set an all-time sales record with a 8.2% increase over the all-time sales record that was previously set in 2016. Highlights for Mercedes include the all-new E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet seeing a sales increase of 33.1% and the GLC SUV and Coupe boasting an 86.3% increase over 2016.
