New for 2017: The Mazda CX-5 underwent a complete redesign for 2017 and although its overall dimensions remained unchanged, the CX-5 received upgraded styling both inside and out along with some new safety and technology features. Not many changes are expected for the CX-5 as we enter 2018.

Segment Competitors: Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, GMC Terrain, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson, Chevrolet Equinox, Volkswagen Tiguan, Jeep Cherokee, Toyota RAV4, Nissan Rogue, Mitsubishi Outlander

The Skinny: The Mazda CX-5 is part of one of the more competitive segments in the entire automotive industry currently and the consensus among many is that it is definitely one of the best in terms of drivability amongst its competitors. It handles much like a car and provides a fun factor that isn’t always found elsewhere in this category. In addition to its great driving characteristics, the CX-5’s new design provides upgraded and upscale looks to what was already a very good looking crossover.

Pros: On top of what I’ve already mentioned, I found the CX-5 to offer a very smooth and quiet ride even at highway speeds.

Cons: Although it drives better than majority of its rivals, it could benefit from a little bit of added power. Also still have trouble with the spinning knob controlling the infotainment system.

The Verdict: In a vehicle segment with so much competition, it is often difficult not to get lost in the crowd. Helped by great drivability and an overall great design, the CX-5 remains near the top of its segment. When the Skyactiv-D turbodiesel powertrain option hits the market in 2018, it only gives the CX-5 another way to stand out from the crowd.
