Bye Bye Beetle: Volkswagen Confirms the Beloved Bug is on its Way Out

Volkswagen have reportedly confirmed that this will be the last generation of the retro-inspired Beetle which returned to showrooms back in 1997 with this current generation beginning in 2011. Autocar out of the UK chatted with Volkswagen R&D boss Frank Welsch at the Geneva Motor Show who said “two or three generations is enough for now,” and added that it was “made with history in mind but you can’t do it five times and have a new new new Beetle.” Volkswagen says they have plans in place to bring a production version of the ID Buzz EV concept which will serve as the retro-inspired model in Volkswagen’s lineup. This news comes after many months of speculation about a next-generation Bug, but this news most certainly squashes that (pun fully intended). If you are unaware, the Volkswagen ID Buzz Electric Concept is a Microbus-inspired concept that is obviously fully electric looks like a modernized version of the aforementioned Microbus.
