Volvo Launches All-New, American-Made S60 Sports Sedan
Volvo recently unveiled their all-new S60 mid-size premium sports sedan at an event that also marked the opening of a new Charleston, South Carolina plant where the car will be built. This will mark the first time a Volvo car has been made in the U.S. and Volvo says that it will reinforce Volvo Cars’ commitment to the U.S. which is an important market for the Swedish automaker. The S60 will be the first Volvo car to be sold without a diesel offering which they say signals an industry-leading commitment to electrification and a long-term future beyond the traditional combustion engine. This should come as no surprise as back in 2017 Volvo was the first global auto manufacturer to announce its strategy to electrify all new models by 2019. Two turbocharged and supercharged plug-in hybrid petrol engines will be available in the new S60 including the T6 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340 horsepower and the T8 Twin Engine AWD plug-in hybrid that produces a total of 400 horsepower. Volvo also says that their proven T5 and T6 gasoline engines will be available when the vehicle launches. The car will feature an active chassis and drive modes to deliver excellent control in any driving situation and Senior Vice President for R&D at Volvo Cars, Henrik Green, says that the S60 will be “one of the best sports sedans on the market.” The new S60 will share the Scalable Product Architecutre Platform (SPA) with the V60, 90-series cars and XC60; all of which have achieved industry-leading safety ratings making the S60 one of the safest cars on the road. A number of safety and technology features will be available on the S60 including City Safety with Autobrake, Pilot Assist, Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and Cross Traffic alert to name a few. Additionally, the Volvo Sensus Connect infotainment system will be fully compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G all controlled through a tablet-style touch screen interface that also controls vehicle functions, navigation and in-car entertainment apps. Production of the new S60 is expected to begin this fall.
